About Us
Ethical Investment
Ethical Screening was established in 1998 to undertake research and analysis into the non-financial aspects of corporate activity that concern the ethical investor, and enable them to invest according to their principles. The company is run by a dedicated team with a wealth of experience in the ethical investment, environmental, social and corporate research fields.

Key Personnel

Lee Coates - Director Lee has worked in the financial services industry since 1982, providing guidance on financial planning since setting up an independent financial advice company, Ethical Investors Group, in 1989.  Lee set up Ethical Screening with Mike Head in 1997, initially to provide a service to discretionary fund management clients of his financial advice company.  He is an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute; a Member of the Society of Financial Advisers; and an Associate of the Institute of Financial Planning.

In addition to his responsibilities as Director within Ethical Screening Lee is able to use his position within the ethical investment industry to build and develop relationships with other investment professionals.  His regular contact with investors and industry insiders enables us to maintain our understanding of their needs and focus our services on issues that are relevant to them.  Lee is currently Chair of the Ecumenical Council for Corporate Responsibility and on the Board of the UK Social Investment Forum.

Gerard Llewellyn - Head of Research
Gerard has environmental bachelor and masters degrees and a background in environmental research. Before joining Ethical Screening he worked as a research assistant in the Environmental Impact Assessment Unit at the University of Wales in Aberystwyth, and as a researcher at Jupiter Asset Management investigating companies for inclusion in their green investment funds.

Gerard has been with Ethical Screening since it was established in 1997 researching and analysing companies, screening client portfolios and developing our research methods and our private, charity and institutional client services.

Emma Robertson - Research and Relationship Management
Emma graduated from Bath University in 2005 with a research degree in International Management and Modern Languages and is fluent in German. After undertaking an internship at The Ecologist magazine where she researched and analysed marketing strategies and reports, Emma joined Ethical Screening as a researcher and helped the team develop their research management systems and methodology.

Her roles include researching and analysing corporate activities and social responsibility issues; research management; and client screening services. She is currently expanding her role into sales and client relationship management

Michael Head - Consultant
Mike has worked in the financial services industry for over since 1982, through involvement with both investment providers and advisers. He has worked in tandem with Lee Coates since the late 1980's, and had a significant role in the foundation and development of Ethical Screening. He works closely with portfolio managers and ethically motivated investors in the design and management of their portfolios.

Mike’s roles within Ethical Screening include the innovation and development of new products and services. His day-to-day contacts with investors and their managers are invaluable in keeping our services relevant to those who use them. One of his focuses is an initiative on the ethical investment requirements of the charity industry.

Michael Clarkson - Consultant
Since joining Credit Suisse Buckmaster & Moore in 1987, Michael worked in the City for 16 years, predominately as a Private Client Investment Manager, for both Credit Suisse UK Limited and subsequently for Laing & Cruickshank, where he managed a wide range of private client investment portfolios, and developed a significant client base with ethical investment mandates.

In 2003 Michael established his own financial consultancy and advisory business, dealing with the financial affairs of private individuals, and has recently begun consultancy work for Ethical Screening, where his investment market expertise is being used to enhance and promote our investment screening services.
